Frequently asked questions
How many naps does a baby need?+
Newborns nap 4–5 times per day. By 3–4 months this typically consolidates to 3 naps. Most babies drop to 2 naps between 6–8 months and transition to 1 nap between 13–18 months. The 1-to-0 nap transition happens between ages 2.5–4 years. These transitions are gradual and individual — watch wake windows, not the clock.
What is a wake window and why does it matter?+
A wake window is the period of wakefulness a baby can handle before needing to sleep again. Too short and they won't be ready to sleep; too long and they become overtired, making it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep. Wake windows are the foundation of all evidence-based infant sleep scheduling.
What time should a baby's last nap end?+
The last nap of the day should end at least 1.5–2 hours before bedtime (for older babies with longer wake windows) to allow adequate sleep pressure to build for the night. For young babies, this window may be shorter. If the last nap ends too close to bedtime, babies often fight sleep; too far away, they become overtired.
Why does my baby fight naps?+
The most common causes are: wake windows that are too short (baby not tired enough), wake windows that are too long (baby overtired and producing cortisol), sleep environment issues (too bright, too noisy), sleep onset associations (needs parental assistance to fall asleep and re-settle), or an upcoming nap transition (ready to drop a nap).
How long should baby naps be?+
For young babies, even short naps (30–45 minutes) are restorative and normal. A complete sleep cycle for infants is approximately 45 minutes, and many babies naturally wake at the cycle end. As babies mature past 6 months, naps ideally extend to 1–2 hours. Short naps are usually a developmental phase, not a problem requiring intervention.
When should I drop the 3-to-2 nap transition?+
Signs it's time to move from 3 to 2 naps: baby is consistently resisting the third nap, the third nap is pushing bedtime very late, baby is staying awake happily for 2+ hours between naps. This transition typically occurs between 6–8 months. Extend the first two naps and move bedtime earlier during the transition period.
