REM Sleep Calculator: How Much REM You're Getting
Estimate your nightly REM sleep, compare it to clinical targets, and learn exactly how to get more.

Borderline Low REM
You may be slightly REM-deficient. Try extending sleep by 30–45 minutes and eliminating evening alcohol.
REM distribution across your night
REM periods tend to lengthen in later cycles — cutting sleep short by 1 hour often cuts out your most REM-rich period.
Frequently asked questions
How much REM sleep do I need per night?+
Adults need approximately 90–120 minutes of REM sleep per night, which equals roughly 20–25% of total sleep time. This is typically spread across 4–5 REM episodes that lengthen through the night, with the longest REM period occurring in the final sleep cycle.
What happens during REM sleep?+
During REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, the brain is almost as active as during wakefulness. It processes emotions, consolidates procedural and emotional memories, clears metabolic waste via the glymphatic system, and generates dreams. Motor neurons are actively paralysed (atonia) to prevent acting out dreams.
Why am I getting less REM sleep?+
The most common causes of reduced REM are: alcohol (dramatically suppresses REM in the first half of the night), sleep deprivation, certain antidepressants (SSRIs and SNRIs reduce REM significantly), sleeping too few hours (REM is concentrated in the final cycles), sleep apnea (arousals interrupt REM), and high stress.
Can I increase REM sleep?+
Yes. The most effective strategies are: extend total sleep time (REM increases disproportionately with longer sleep), eliminate alcohol especially within 3 hours of bed, maintain a consistent wake time, manage stress, and if on SSRIs discuss timing with your physician as evening dosing may be less REM-suppressive than morning.
What is REM rebound?+
REM rebound is the phenomenon where your brain compensates for REM deprivation with dramatically increased REM during the following nights. It produces more vivid dreams and can temporarily cause nightmare-intensity imagery. It is commonly experienced when stopping alcohol, benzodiazepines, or REM-suppressing antidepressants.
Does less REM sleep affect memory?+
Yes profoundly. REM sleep is critical for emotional memory consolidation, procedural learning (motor skills, music, sports), and creative insight. Matthew Walker's research at UC Berkeley showed that students who got full REM sleep retained 40% more learned material than those who had REM suppressed. A single night of REM loss produces measurable memory consolidation deficits.
