What is sleep onset latency?+

Sleep onset latency (SOL) is the amount of time it takes you to fall asleep after getting into bed and attempting to sleep. It is one of the primary metrics used in clinical sleep research and polysomnography studies to evaluate sleep health.

How long should it take to fall asleep?+

A healthy sleep onset latency is between 10 and 20 minutes. Falling asleep in under 5 minutes suggests significant sleep deprivation or hypersomnolence. Taking more than 30 minutes regularly is one of the diagnostic criteria for insomnia disorder.

Why do I fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow?+

Falling asleep within 1–5 minutes is often a sign of severe sleep deprivation rather than good sleep health. Your brain has accumulated so much sleep pressure (adenosine) that it initiates sleep almost immediately. It can also indicate narcolepsy or other hypersomnolence disorders if it happens regardless of how much sleep you've had.

How can I reduce my sleep onset latency?+

The most evidence-backed approaches are: strict consistent wake time (the single most powerful intervention), no screens for 60 minutes before bed, keeping your bedroom cool (65–68°F / 18–20°C), stimulus control therapy (bed only for sleep and sex), relaxation techniques (4-7-8 breathing, progressive muscle relaxation), and CBT-I if the problem is chronic.

Does sleep onset latency change with age?+

Yes. Children and teenagers tend to fall asleep quickly but have delayed circadian phase (night owls). Adults in their 20s–40s have the most stable sleep onset. Older adults often fall asleep faster at an earlier clock time due to advanced sleep phase, but experience more fragmentation after sleep onset.
